Easy access to a variety of information about different places, cultures, events, and even people, has fueled a drive to experience much more than what we are used to. It is no longer enough that we see online content; we now want to leave the comfort of our homes and experience everything the world has to offer us. With the invention of the internet, the world seems much more reachable.
In today’s travel society, more and more people are looking for online sources to vouch for the credibility of tourist spots before they leave the comfort of their homes. There are many local tourism-related businesses all over the Philippines that do not have the advantage of having an online presence. There are a variety of reasons to this. Some owners say that the business is small-scale and so, rely mainly on walk-ins or the overflow of neighboring establishments. Some just do not see how much this small change can affect their businesses in the long run and so do not make the effort.
So how do we fix this problem?
#WhyOnline is our solution. This traveling caravan’s main event is a digital tourism seminar aimed at creating an awareness of the benefits of an online presence for local businesses to grow. Each destination will host a 1-2 day seminar where the participating local tourism stakeholders can learn how the Internet has changed traveling and tourism, as well as how they can use the Internet to their advantage.
In partnership with the local government units and tourism-related private associations, entrepreneurs in the tourism industry are invited to attend, as well as those who are just planning to dive into the industry. The seminar will be composed of lectures from industry leaders, as well as from local entrepreneurs who have benefited in being online. Open discussions are also part of the program in order to encourage our partners to voice out their thoughts and ideas.
With a little nudge from us, we aim to have local businesses realize the importance of an online presence in the industry today and push to create for themselves a share of the ever-growing tourism market. While it is true that some of these businesses are present in social media, most commonly through a Facebook page, a platform that ensures credibility and quality of product and service would be much more beneficial to them to even the playing ground and allow travelers the chance to explore hidden gems without worry.
#WhyOnline is set to have its opening seminar in Cagayan Valley in partnership with the Cagayan Economic Zone Authority (CEZA). The seminar will be taking place at Crown Lodge and Restaurant on the March 2, 2015 from 8:30 AM.
