Say hello to our new feature,

TRAVEL INSPIRATION: #TEAMFLIPTRIP’S TRAVEL INSTAGRAM YOU SHOULD BE FOLLOWING

A weekly feature on #TeamFlipTrip and #FlipTripPH travelers!

Astounding pictures from all over. we can’t want to feature a lot of deserving and #goals travelers in the upcoming weeks!

Aaron Palabyab is a filmmaker and photographer who has traveled all around the world – as you can see by his favorite shots we’ll feature down below. ‘Ocean heart, mountain mind, starry eyed’. That’s his description on Instagram and  everyone who sees his shots will understand why.  Check out @apalabyab on instagram to check out his adventures! You can also go straight to his website at http://www.aaronpalabyab.com/ to check out his stellar shots, his travel films that make you green with envy or to purchase his art!

ap1

We’ve been looking through your profile, and your pictures are super nice by the way! How long have you been traveling?

That’s very kind of you! Since graduating in 2007, but my independent travel frequency really picked up in 2014.

What do you do?

I am a filmmaker (director/cameraman/editor/writer, in that order) by profession, and a semi-pro photographer. I also recently got into fine art printing and am testing the waters doing that for clients.

ap5

Our readers want to know, what do you do so you can afford to travel?

Nothing special, just a combination of work and selling stuff I’ve accumulated over the years that I don’t use anymore. As much as possible I try and find opportunities to travel for free as well. The advantage of my job is there are definitely opportunities for it.

ap3

Aside from traveling, what do you like to do in your spare time?

I learn stuff and I make stuff, I guess. I read a lot on the Internet! Anything interesting, or researching on new places to go, etc. I take in a lot of video and photography online. I also try and teach myself new photography and video techniques depending on what I’m doing. Lately I’ve been printing photos to decompress after a long day. I should read more books and watch more movies and TV series but it’s hard for me to sit still. I also work out, being fit makes travel so much more enjoyable.

What do you look for in your next destination?

Now that I travel primarily to take photographs, I look for a few things: the presence of unique and really good angles for photos (which are different from just nice views), few tourists but relatively easy access (i.e., no rock scrambling required, no communist rebels, etc.), and dark, clear skies with reliably good weather.

ap2

What’s your favorite destination in The Philippines so far?

It used to be Tubbataha Reef and that’s still way up there on my list, it’s a magical place. but I’ve since become more of a mountain than an ocean person since trekking the Andes in 2014. The Philippine Cordilleras are like my new spiritual home, I love gazing at these huge mountains even though I’m terrible at climbing them. If I could spend a month just roaming those mountains and shooting I would love that. There’s also so much culture and spirit in them, it’s a mystical place.

ap4

Why do you think other travelers should come and explore The Philippines?

The Philippines is still really under the radar considering how much there is to see here and the wide variety of places to explore. We’re still mostly known for places like Palawan and Boracay and for how awful Manila is. But seeing for myself how much the lesser known places have to offer, I’m sure that any backpacker seeking a unique experience and a real adventure would be blown away if they knew everything we had in store. And besides, we speak English!

What is your message to other travelers?

Go out and travel and don’t do it to be cool or because you want more Instagram followers or whatever. No one cares, just do it for yourself and your own growth and satisfaction. Respect the places you visit and let them change you, not the other way around. Travel is the best education out there and if you can manage to do it for upwards of one month continuously you will open up your entire world.

Lessons from the Road

They say experience is the best teacher in life. We say that travel is our favorite class! Even Euripedes said that “Experience, travel– these are an education in themselves.” Well, you can’t argue with Euripedes!

I’ve been out and about for the past few years, exploring the Philippines, and some other parts of the world. From Luzon to Visayas to Mindanao, I’ve been blessed with the opportunities to explore India, Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand, Singapore, Japan, USA, and Germany over the past 2 years!

FullSizeRender_1

Some days, I slept on a luxurious bed in a five-star hotel, other days, I fought off bed bugs on a hostel bed. Long bus rides up the winding roads of the Cordilleras somehow turned into the subway of New York, and then one day, it turned into a train from Mumbai to Aurangabhad in Central India.

No matter how sure I was of where I was going, or how extremely lost in translation I felt, each moment felt like a new beginning. As I traced my steps back though my different journeys, I realized the things that changed in the way I think and do things.

Here are a few of my favorite ones:

Lesson 1: SIMPLIFY YOUR LIFE.

Take only what’s important, and absolutely necessary. One day, I realized that I was taking too many things that I hardly ever used during my trip. Most of the time, they pretty much just weighed me down and made my luggage even heavier. Not to mention the wasted baggage allowance (that could have been used for chocolates and pasalubong!).

The best way to counter this is to narrow down your must-haves into a small backpack that you can take with you anywhere. You know, the things that you know you can’t live without. If you think that you’ll end up leaving it in your room most of the time anyway, leave it. You’ll probably end up not using it at all anyway.

In a way, I’ve learned to do the same with my life. Suddenly, my closet and room became less cluttered, and my schedule had time for spending with the people I love. My everyday schedule became my backpack, and the space in it I’ve learned to save only for the things and people that truly matter to me.

IMG_3112

Lesson 2: YOUR COMFORT ZONE ENDS WHERE YOU LET IT.

Clifton Fadiman said: “When you travel, remember that a foreign country is not designed to make you comfortable. It is designed to make its own people comfortable.”

They say your comfort zone is the limit of your growth. In truth, you are the only one that can dictate how far it can go. The beauty of taking yourself out of it, is that it forces you to extend it.

Traveling is a way that challenges you that does just this. Trip after trip, I found myself going on more difficult adventures, and I always ended up thanking myself for taking up the challenge. Each time, I got better at dealing with different situations, and eventually, I could take up even better challenges.

FullSizeRender_3

Lesson 3: WALKING WILL ALWAYS LEAD YOU TO SOMETHING A CAR CAN’T.

Take your time and soak it all in. Little discoveries lead to great stories! Some of the best experiences we are those that we simply stumble upon. I’m an advocate of always have a plan…A, B, C….Z, but it’s always good to leave room for some misadventures.

On my first day in New York, I walked from the site of the World Trade Center all the way to Central Park. It was not my intention. I was simply awestruck by the beauty of the city. I just kept hopping one spot to the next, checking out whatever caught my eye. The next thing I knew, I was already by the park, and I happily smiled as I tried to identify spots that I recognized from watching Gossip Girl.

In Hyderabad, my boyfriend and I could have easily taken a taxi everywhere. It was affordable enough to use it, even on a tiny budget. Yet if we didn’t choose to walk, we wouldn’t have been able to come by a stall where a man was freshly cooking up a new batch of chai tea, our favorite tea. We watched as he put in fresh spices, and let the aroma fill up the street. Because he finally got to watch a real local doing it, my boyfriend found out what it takes to make chai tea. Therefore, I can now enjoy fresh chai tea whenever he feels like making a batch! Yay!

 FullSizeRender_4

Lesson 4: THERE’S NO PLACE LIKE HOME.

“People travel to faraway places to watch, in fascination, the kind of people they ignore at home.” -Dagobert D. Runes

It’s normal to get desensitized to our own surroundings. Heck, we go to far away places to “experience culture”, often without having actually taken note of our own. It’s normal. We live in our own bubbles, wherein we’ve settled into our routine and identified our “familiar”. We wake up, get on with our commute, brave EDSA, if needed, then go off into our offices or schools, and work. We clock out, turn off our laptops, and gaze into our phones, as we make our way to a dinner, a meet up, or a cup of coffee at our regular spot. At the end of the day, we go back to our homes, settle in. Go to sleep. Repeat.

Yet when we travel someplace distant, we marvel at the lives of other people. We feel as if we’ve gotten a glimpse of “the other side”. When, in fact, “the other side” was right in front of us to begin with. Exploring other paths made me appreciate my familiar surroundings. The hustle and bustle of the streets of Manila, the food that you get on the street, whether from a fishball or fruit stand, or a jolly jeep by the road. Suddenly, I woke up to the streets I tread on a daily basis, and began to really look at the people around me. In a way, I grew to love my home and the people in it even more. Rowdy jeepney drivers and DBD vendors and all. You simply won’t get them anywhere else.

FullSizeRender_5 FullSizeRender (12)

These are only four of the lessons I’ve learn from my life on the road so far. There are a lot more. I’d love to hear what you’ve learn on your own adventures, so please feel free to write a comment on this post!

TRAVEL INSPIRATION: FEATURED TRAVELERS (@patriciahenson)

# TeamFlipTrip is loving all the hashtags and posts! Keep them coming, because we’ve got exciting things in store for you!

We’ve already shown you our TOP 3 WEEKLY INSTAGRAM PICKS, so now it’s time to show you what we’ve been cooking up!

Say hello to our new feature,

TRAVEL INSPIRATION: #TEAMFLIPTRIP’S TRAVEL INSTAGRAM YOU SHOULD BE FOLLOWING

A weekly feature on #TeamFlipTrip and #FlipTripPH travelers!

We’ve been doing this for a month now and we couldn’t be happier at the turnout of this feature! Here is our feature of the week!

Patricia Henson is a student at University of the Philippines. She is a model and entrepreneur, you may know her swimwear brand, Costa Swimwear. An avid traveler, photographer, designer and a beach babe at heart, this woman has both beauty and brains. You can check out her stunning pictures on instagram at @patriciahenson.

IMG_3320

Patricia, you have got quite the feed. How long have you been traveling?

Well, I’ve been traveling around the Philippines since I was a kid. Ever since, my dad’s job required him to visit different provinces and I would tag long with him. Every weekend, there would always be some place new to check out! I started traveling on my own (without  parental guidance that is haha) once I graduated from high school back in 2010.

IMG_3322

What do you do?

I’m still a student! I also own a swimwear brand (Costa Swimwear), I’m a model and a social media influencer.

IMG_3321

Our readers want to know, what do you do so you can afford to travel?

My parents already cut-off my allowance because of my overstaying in college! Haha! I have a few rackets here and there with graphic design but my main source of income would be my modeling jobs, my swimwear line and projects I get as a social media influencer.

IMG_3325

Aside from traveling, what do you like to do in your spare time?

I love taking photographs, that’s for sure. I enjoy watching a good film, I like to to draw every now and then, and I also love playing basketball!

IMG_3324

What do you look for in your next destination

I want to go some place raw, a place that’s untouched. But definitely it would have to include the sun, San and sea and it has to be in the Philippines. There’s just so much to explore in our country!

First, Ben and Karley, then Mica De Guzman, now we present to you

Paolo Cuarteron!

Paolo Cuarteron is a 23 year old wanderer who we can’t help but love. Some of you know him as @paocua on Instagram.  This avid wanderer takes splendid photos, capturing off the beaten path destinations from all over the world! His subjects are mostly of others but you could get a glimpse of the man behind the camera if you look hard enough.  Don’t forget to check out @paocua’s Instagram to be convinced that you should further explore this beautiful country called The Philippines.

FullSizeRender_2

Your pictures are phenomenal, Pao! How long have you been traveling?

I’ve been traveling (almost) every week since last year.

What do you do?

I help out with the family business.

Our readers want to know, what do you do so you can afford to travel?

I allot some of my income to traveling. To stretch it out, I watch out for seat sales and look for cheap lodging.

FullSizeRender

Aside from traveling, what do you like to do in your spare time?

In my spare time, I like to hone my skills in photography and editing. So I look up tutorials online and read articles about photography and try them out. Otherwise, I cook or bake – same; look for recipes online and try them out haha!

What do you look for in your next destination?

Nothing in particular, but I’m down for anything! I’m a ‘kaladkarin’ so I don’t really mind haha – like it doesn’t have to be somewhere new. I remember going to this particular mountain six weekends in a row. It’s about being spontaneous and positive about the trip regardless of how many times you have visited that place. After all, you can never visit the same place twice!

FullSizeRender_1

What’s your favorite destination in The Philippines so far?

By far, my favorite destination in The Philippines is Biri Island in Northern Samar with its several rock formations and intertidal pools. It feels like you’re in a different country.

FullSizeRender_5

Why do you think other travelers should come and explore The Philippines?

Travelers should come and explore the Philippines because it gives you 7,107 reasons to go back – from experiencing different cultures to trying out different dishes. Also, there are still a lot of places waiting to be discovered by travelers alike. Places wherein locals are eager to share stories of folklore to spice up your night as you camp out in the woods, and exchange laughter amongst you and your buddies as you accidentally slid your way down the mountain. The Philippines is more than just a destination; it is a collection of stories that would inspire you to keep on exploring and to never cease to marvel.

FullSizeRender_3

What is your message to other travelers?

Have that spontaneity in you. Ask the locals to take you to places that are not found on the Internet; whether may it be a hidden gem or just a karinderya sa kanto – they know the best places to take you. Oh and of course, know when to put the camera down; be in the moment and enjoy!

FullSizeRender_7

Thanks Pao! Keep updated on Pao’s adventures on Instagram @paocua!

A shared new experience is a great way to create new memories and strengthen bonds. After 10 years, you would definitely look back at these with a smile! We have a few suggestions that are affordable and offers great experiences: Bambike and Flow House Manila!

If you have never been to Intramuros, the best way to go around it would be on a Bamboo Bike! Another new thing to try is flowboarding at Molino, Cavite at Flow House. Flowboarding is a bit like skating on water. It sounds pretty intimidating but it’s fun, safe and a great bonding experience!

Bring your significant other! It’s time to try something new you can bond and laugh about. If you are a tita or tito of Manila, bring your nieces and nephews, they’d love it for sure. If you are a barkada, bring your homies; eating nachos by the pool while catching up on life never fails!

Rates: Bambike – 1200 per person | Flow House – 650 per person

A Surfing Trip for Beach Babies: Adventures in Baler or Zambales

Whether you want it in Z Land or in the land of perfect cerulean waves, Baler, beach trips are always a source of happiness. A good surf session (beginner or otherwise) can surely make one fall in love with the ocean and cure any broken heart. There’s nothing like sea salt to make  those eyes sparkle with happiness! So bring anyone you love to sea the sunrise and swim in warm waters!

Check out what’s in store for you in Zambales here!

Say hello to Baler! See what this amazing province has to offer!

An Adventure: Pinatubo or RapidStream Adventure in Tarlac

Inside all of us is a wild thing: satiate the need to interact with nature and do this with the people you love for maximum fun. Take your family or barkada on an adventure that would make them see the greens (and blues! unless they are color blind). Our suggestion is a group tour to see the famous Pinatubo crater or go on a water adventure and course through the rapids in San Jose.

Check out the rapids of San Jose here!

Go on an adventure, take your buddies and explore Mt Pinatubo here.

Go off the beaten path: Explore Cagayan

Ever dreamed about going to the edge of the Philippines? Cagayan is high on the bucket list of every true Philippine explorer. The gift of visiting the northern islands is as special as Tuguegarao’s famous Pancit Batil Patung (believe me,the best pancit you will ever try).

Here, one can see amazingly unique destinations like a cathedral inside a cave (yup, you can even hold your wedding here)  one of the cleanest (arguably the cleanest) rivers in the Philippines where sometimes bats will fly overhead come sunset, and amazing islands so beautiful it will take your breath away. Give the gift of awe for someone awesome.

 cagayan - boat

Check out where you can stay and the adventures you can go on here.

One off the Bucket List: See the Perfect Mayon Volcano at Albay, go canyoneering at Naga

An amazing sight is priceless, and seeing the look of amazement on someone you love upon seeing something beautiful is even more priceless.

If you know someone who has always wanted to see the perfect cone of Mayon, this trip is the perfect gift. Especially since there are a lot of opportunities for side trips in this peaceful city. After seeing Mayon, you can go for food trips at the coolest cafes in the city and maybe try chili ice cream and a lot of chili flavored things (there are a lot).

After Albay, time to explore Naga and maybe try climbing Mount Isarog and rappel down a waterfall! Naga is also home to the best restaurants and homey food that tastes like being hugged by your grandmother in your old kitchen that smelled of homemade cookies.

bicol

Unique and especially exceptional, check out this experience here.

Gift of Learning: Cockfighting Tour, Binondo Food Tour, Intramuros Tour

For the really busy ones, there are a lot of options in Manila as well. This is a city of pleasant surprises. One can do food tours in Binondo or join the Intramuros Tour by Carlos Celdran. If you are looking for something different, or if you have loved ones arriving from abroad, you can even let them attend a live sabong match. Beware of wads of cash flying overhead.

Climb Mount Pulag or Go on a Special Tour in Banaue and Sagada

We all know the cold never bothered you anyway.

Nothing can make one feel better than chill weather and fluffy sweaters: Even for those trying to recover from their exes’ cold, cold heart. Give them the gift of going somewhere even colder! The North. No, I’m not talking about Game of Thrones. I am talking about Baguio, Banaue or Sagada. From coffee tours, to seeing hanging coffins, to witnessing the sea of clouds. You are meant go here, this is tadhana! (tadhana=fate)

Chase waterfalls and see the sea of clouds here!

A Happy Tummy: Philippines on a Plate Tour with XO46

What spells quality time more than shared gastronomic delight with your significant other or the family? Truly, bonding over good food is just the thing to make everyone feel the love in! Bring your S.O., whole family or your best friends together and bond over plate after plate of Filipino food while your guide retells the heritage behind the dish. Treat your loved ones to an eight course meal that will delight your senses while the chef himself dishes out the facts on the table.

Rate: Philippines on a Plate Tour: 2000+  per person

Experience XO46’s mouthwatering feasts here.

Voluntourism at Bulacan or Taal Heritage Town

Of course, this season is all about the love going around. The spirit of giving is especially strong during February. Why not feel warm and fuzzy inside by doing something nice? Check out Taal Heritage Town to experience the other side of things or go volunteer in Bulacan to be the you that you can be proud of.

After our first feature on Ben and Karley, here is FlipTripPH’s feature for the week!

Mica De Guzman graduated from De La Salle University – Manila and is currently in The Ateneo de Manila Law School. This future lawyer’s instagram account (@micadeguzman) isn’t something you can overlook. If her head’s not in the books, it’s climbing the highest mountains and diving the deepest seas. Check out her instagram and follow her on her adventures!

FullSizeRender (4)

We’ve been looking through your profile, Mica, and your pictures look magnificent! How long have you been traveling?

I’ve been traveling since I was about 7 with my family in domestic destinations and international ones, but it’s just for visiting family or the usual destinations. So I would prefer to say that I actually started traveling and exploring at the age of 19 with my group of friends from college when we’d go to the most remote beaches in the Philippines.

So now, what do you do?

I am a 2nd year law student in Ateneo Law School.

IMG_2234

Our readers want to know, what do you do so you can afford to travel?

As a post-grad student, it is a known fact that you’re at a limbo. So for my travels, I do my best to budget my allowance for school that I make sure I have some money saved up for my travels. It’s not much, so I do my best to find the most affordable trips around the Philippines.

Aside from traveling, what do you like to do in your spare time?

Majority of my time are focused on my books, readings and my cases. In my free time, I try to do a variety of activities such as scuba diving, boxing, muay thai, mountain biking, hiking, yoga and running.

What do you look for in your next destination?

I prefer non-touristy places, the unexplored ones, and the most remote out of them all.

What’s your favorite destination in The Philippines so far?

It has to be El Nido, Palawan. When various articles claim that it is the best island of the Philippines, it truly is! My mistake was thinking 1 week would suffice to tour the entire island. I had to go back to El Nido twice in 2015. There are mountains, waterfalls, remote beaches, scuba diving, bike trails, and a lot more to be explored.

Why do you think other travelers should come and explore The Philippines?

I’ve been to other beaches in Asia and the US but my best advice would be for travelers and especially to my fellow Filipino travelers to travel the Philippines first! I can’t imagine how long it would be to be able to explore our 7,107 islands. Also, it is inexpensive and there is just so much to see. Photos cannot even fully capture how beautiful everything is

What is your message to other travelers?

Go out of your comfort zone, you’ll be surprised on how much you’re missing out on! The new experiences, realizations, cultures, and people you’ll be encountering will be truly unparalleled.
