Why YOU should Travel (to) The Philippines

The Philippines is breath taking with over 7,107 islands to explore. How could one possibly decide on where to start? You can scream to the highest heavens, hiking up the country’s tallest mountain, or test your luck in catching turtles while diving the deepest depths of the oceans. I was born and raised in The Philippines and I got to travel both inside and outside of this beautiful country. But I really have to say….

There’s no place like The Philippines.

FlipTrip Tripkada Fun in the Philippines Meeting new people

Filipinos are some of the most hospitable people in the planet. They are ready to greet you with a smile and to direct you the right way (as much as they can). One thing is certain, you will never get lost in The Philippines as long as there are friendly Filipinos along the way. With very little to no language barrier (most of us speak English fluently), its strike up a lively conversation and make new friends as you explore the country.

Pampering Yourself

Massage

From massages by the beach, foot spas fish with fish nibbling at your feet, and manicures that end up with flowers on your nails. This country is the perfect place to have 350 Php (approx 8 USD) massages. Spas and Nail salons are scattered all over the country! While you’re in the country, make sure to try the traditional hilot massage.

Food

FlipTrip Tripkada Philippines Filipino Streetfood

Everything is available in this country… For a very cheap price. My personal favourite is the street food. I love me some good barbecue and isaw. Word to the wise, don’t ask what they are and what they’re made of, just trust that you’ll love them anyway.

Another thing you’ll miss in this country is the service water. At almost any fastfood joint or eatery, you can ask for water and they give it to you free of charge. Also, you can not leave the Philippines without trying some fresh fruit! Mangoes especially!

While you’re in Boracay, try the chori-burger and the Jonas fruitshake! While you’re in Vigan, don’t miss out on their empanadas. Each province/city is known for a dish!

If you’re craving for a taste of somewhere else, wherever that might be, you’re quite likely to find a restaurant to satisfy your craving. Asian Cuisine, Western Cuisine, or some fusion of sorts, there are restaurants that cater to your taste-buds! All you have to do is ask around with a smile.

Cheap Alcohol

For me, traveling wouldn’t be complete without alcohol. The prices for alcohol here is lower than most countries. Only in The Philippines can you buy a bottle of Rum worth 80 PHP (less than 2 USD!) and live to tell the tale.

You also have to take a swig of the different varieties of San Miguel Beer here. You’re better of trying Red Horse and Pale Pilsel if you’re a strong drinker, or the San Mig Light or San Mig Apple (Apple flavored beer) if you’re a lightweight. 😉

Weather and Climate

Screen Shot 2016-07-05 at 3.24.43 PM

Being a tropical country, the weather is equally as beautiful. The average temperature is around 27-30 degrees celsius so one can easily adapt. But then again the weather can sometimes be unpredictable if it will rain or shine, but hey, everyone loves swimming on a sunny day or dancing in the rain!

Nature

Being in The Philippines makes you more in tune with your nature-god/goddess self. You are surrounded with different species of wildlife and some of the most amazing floras you can ever imagine. There are over 600 species of birds, 300 species of reptiles and amphibians and at least 400 coral species. You can find the giant whale sharks in Sogod Bay and Donsol, 5 of the 8 species of turtles, the Philippine tarsier and a lot more scattered around the country. You will also get to see some of the most amazing rice terraces, waterfalls, land formations and the like.

What are you waiting for? Explore this amazing paradise and check out what you’ve been missing out on! Embark on an adventure of a lifetime! You surely cannot get enough of The Philippines. It reels you in and keeps you coming back for more.

FlipTrip hosts exclusive Travel Meetup for Trip Organizers

Events are a great way to meet people of the same interests, hobbies, ideas and mindset. For travelers, it is a great way to meet travel buddies and the perfect opportunity to make new memories with new found friends. A few days ago, FlipTrip invited some of the best travel organizers in The Philippines to get in on what we’re cooking up in the kitchen!

The night started off with a human bingo ice breaker that actually did succeed in breaking the ice. People were mingling, strangers became friends who then had the pleasure of partaking into trivia games and challenges focusing on travel around The Philippines. Of course our night wouldn’t be complete with people winning awesome prizes from FlipTrip.PH! Almost everyone didn’t leave empty handed, either bringing along a shirt or goodie bag along with them!

We then showcased our upcoming app which received overwhelming feedback! We couldn’t have asked for a better set of people to test our upcoming app.  Everyone was treated to this sneak peak and were able to mix in a little bit of their own ingredient to ensure that this would be a best seller. Trip organizers and attendees were excited to chip in their ideas on how to make the app better than it already was!

Why I Decided To Travel Alone

When I was younger, everybody told me: “Travel. Move away! Now is the best moment.”. I didn’t understand it at the time. Why would they say that? What did they mean?

Now I realize: Life is too short, and time moves too fast! We never know what life will bring tomorrow.

I am not telling you to travel because everybody tells you it is the best moment. I am just telling you it’s important to enjoy life while you can.

I am telling you that sometimes, you need to stop and listen to that voice at the back of your head, and realize what it is that makes that voice start ringing.

What is it that you want? What is it that will make your day feel like it’s been the best day ever? How can you make that happen more often? It can be travel, it can be work, it can be binging out on a big bag of chips!

Because I decided to travel, I’ll share why it’s okay to go out and wander on your own. You don’t need to wait for someone to take you. If you always wait for someone to be free, you will never get your chance (or you’ll wait…FOREVER!).

insta-taongbundokmd

Here are a few reasons why I think traveling alone wouldn’t be such a sad and lonely thing:

1. Being alone doesn’t mean being lonely.

You can meet new people and experience different cultures. Generally, travelling with someone makes you less likely to interact with other people (unless you’re both just super sociable). If you eat or drink on your own, its easier to join a conversation, or people can approach you better.

insta-joaoleitaoviagens

2. You find that your comfort zone develops to have no limit.

You thrust yourself into your unknown and expand your comfort zone without limit. Traveling alone and outside your comfort zone can teach you a lot about yourself. You suddenly discover you can do things you never tried to do. You realize that you really can stand on your own two feet.

3. You learn to feel at home everywhere, and have (little) fear.

How proud you’ll feel about yourself, knowing that you can survive in place other than your own home. That you can create your home anywhere, with anyone. The great thing is that for as long as you’re open to joining new communities, if you need help, you simply need to ask (nicely).

4. You become more independent about your decisions.

A huge advantage of traveling on your own is that you can manage your time. You don’t need to you because your friend want to be back at this time. Even if you have encounter surprises, it is less of a problem, because you don’t have to be accountable to somebody.

So seize the moment, and embrace your turn to go out and do something for yourself. I decided to travel. What do you want to do?

How long have you both been traveling?

Traveling is our common passion. We’ve been having random travels and dates even before we became a couple in 2014.

What do you guys do?

Gene works as a copywriter/content creator in an advertising agency while Karren works as a Brand and Marketing manager in a retail company.

kgw2

Our readers want to know, what do you do so you can afford to travel?

Most people think that our jobs pay us enough to afford our travels but that’s not actually true. Most of our budget actually goes to our families, daily necessities (especially food), and of course, we do some hardcore planning to save up for our future trips. We usually allot around 6 months of preparation for an adventure.

Aside from traveling, what do you guys like to do in your spare time?

Karren loves to cook and Gene loves to eat whatever Karren cooks. If you rank all our passions, food comes next to traveling. However, we usually spend our lazy time watching movies and playing games.

kgw4

What do you guys look for in your next destination?

A beautiful destination is never enough for us so we are looking for places that offer the best experience possible. After all, each adventure is a part of our story – stories that one day, we hope we can pass on to our children, grandchildren and even to those who want to hear our stories.

What’s your favorite destination in The Philippines so far?

Definitely Palawan! It’s a place where absolutely everybody can have an experience of a lifetime.

kgw5

Why do you think other travelers should come and explore The Philippines?

Think about this: the Philippines has over 7,000 islands which could translate to 7,000 unique adventures and stories for each person. If you’re looking for an adventure you will never forget, the Philippines have almost everything from world-class beaches, breathtaking views from different mountains, and some of the richest diving spots in the world. Actually, if you look at the Philippines on a map, it looks like a guy who couldn’t wait to go on an adventure! So, why shouldn’t you? 🙂

What is your message to other travelers?

Don’t travel if you’re just looking for an escape or just for the sake of crossing it out of your bucket-list. Travel for the experience and to create stories with the people you love most – stories that would do more than make great conversations over dinner, but stories that can hopefully inspire others as well.

 kgw3
Gotta love couples bitten by the travel bug! Their stories and experiences are something to learn from and admire! Thank you Ayen and Gene!

You want to be featured? Post your amazing snapshots on Instagram using the hashtags #TeamFlipTrip and #FlipTripPH! If your account is on private, please do send us a direct message so we can see! Who knows, you just might see your face here next month!

Listen to the Stars: Where YOU should go next according to your Zodiac Sign

Like others, you may habitually check your horoscope, or like me, you take quizzes and personality tests just to see if your Zodiac Sign is as accurate as everyone says. The stars can tell us a lot about our character and general preferences.

With the 7,107 islands The Philippines has to offer, one must be conflicted on where to explore next. Well, look no further, your Zodiac Sign *ehem, and us* will make your life easier. Our suggestions are based on what we think is best suited for your sign and which place will make you the happiest.

So should the Aries laze around the island of Boracay or a Siquijor trip would be more fitting?

We’ve got a few recommendations for your sign. Check out if these destinations match with your travel bucket list of the year!

Aquarius (January 20-February 18)

aquarius

An Aquarius is good with his/her head. Usually, they are the thinkers, the scientists, the eccentric artists, and the inventors. They were born to rock the boat and disrupt the way things are.

With that as their nature, people with this sign love things that fall along the lines of unique and uncommon. A good fit for this is something that’s pretty unconventional. You would want to be the first to experience a new found thrill, or go to that place where nobody else goes to, or some place that is eccentric and weird – in a good way!

Our suggestion? Try something out of the box. A visit to the cultural heritage town of Taal. It is seeing the area from the other side.

Pisces (February 19-March 20)

pisces

People who fall under this sign are dreamers, artists, visionaries, poets, and those of whom hold a certain mystic. That the beauty of the Pisces, they just don’t know who they are yet becoming, and they have the entire world to discover who they want to be.

Sticking with a sign, a Pisces would love anywhere close to the water or where there is an expansive view. This feeling excites the poetic side of Pisces. As for those romantic at heart, a retreat where you disregard all social media and cell reception for a day or two is good for you. Disconnect to connect is something we always say.

Of course, like Poseidon, you should try controlling the waves. If that doesn’t work, you can always ride them. The beaches of Baler or Zambales can cure that itch to be in the water.

Aries (March 21-April 19)

aries

This fire sign is often associated with warriors. And what do all warriors have in common? They have the same need to conquer fear and find courage within themselves.

With that, your ideal adventure will be something that involves overcoming obstacles you think that are scary. Something new and foreign always excite you. It depends on you, actually. What you think will get your blood pumping and stimulate that adrenaline.

You could always try jumping out a plane and skydiving in Clark. Or you could get lost, head off to the mountain provinces or book a flight to Siquijor. Whatever you’re too afraid to try, go do that.

Taurus (April 20-May 20)

taurus

The Taurus is often perceived as a bull, but in most cases, it is a cow – peaceful, rolling around and enjoying the peace and serenity the meadow offers.

The people who fall under this sign seek that soothing, relaxation time. The Taurus loves places where they can let their hair down, unwind and reflect. A massage would be ideal or a scenic boat ride visiting the beautiful islands of the country is always an option.

Only a few hours away from Manila, Pangasinan’s ‘Hundred Islands’ could be the perfect option  for you. Get away from it all, swim to your heart’s content and just let all your inhibitions go.

Gemini (May 21-June 20)

gemini

Geminis have the curiosity of a child. Full of wonder and excitement, sometimes with a fleeting attention span but none-the-less, they make sure to cover all areas. Discovery and uncovering facts are what keeps these story tellers at heart going.

Taking that into consideration, the best option would be a fleeting place or going to a destination with several stops along the way. The Gemini has a need to experience things that have a lot of variety and an itinerary that doesn’t bore anyone, for it’ll make a great story for those who are willing to listen about the adventures they’ve been up to.

A place like Cebu would be great for a Gemini. The option of canyoneering one day, swimming with the aquatic life the next, and discovering waterfalls the day after that is enticing. You will never get bored with all the sights to see and things to do.

Cancer (June 21-July 22)

cancer

A Cancer places a big weight in the rulings of the heart. Feelings emotions, subconscious, loyalty and all others come to play when dealing with this sign.

With that said, the people who fall under this sign are closely related to the feeling of ‘home’ even in the hustle and bustle of city life. A staycation could be the best option for you. Take a load off and just rest. Or you always have the option of exploring some place new that you are instinctively drawn to.

You can check out what Manila has to offer. Learn more about our history and culture through a walking or bike tour in Intramuros. Hit up the museums there and check out the picturesque views of what is inside the walled city.

Leo (July 23-August 22)

leo

Always happy and in a celebratory mood,  The Leo is the sign of the sun, the king. Wanting to exude a sense of regality, they don’t forget the simplicity and appeal of childlike celebrations.

That being said, a Leo must go on a vacation fit for a king that is meaningful for ones personality. Break out your finest heels and luxurious jewels and go on a night out in town. Not feeling that vibe? Get in touch with your inner-child and sign on for fun filled activities! Rent a jetski, go on a roller coaster ride. This depends on your definition of meaningful. A trip as simple as camping can be just as meaningful as a night in the palace.

Go out for a night in the town! Catch a show in CCP, stay in a high class hotel in Manila or head on over to Borawan and set to camp away from the hustle and bustle of the city! Make sure whatever you do is as meaningful as you want it to be!

Virgo (August 23-September 22)

virgo

The Virgo is conservative in nature. This perfectionist and crafty one is craving for an adventure that can enrich ones self.

Simple and conservative, that is the Virgo. With that said, going back to basics is ideal for the people that fall under this sign.  The relaxation and comfort is enticing but practicality, functional and self improvement is key to the vacation’s success and happiness.

Go give back and feel the warm fuzzies! Volunteer at GK Enchanted Farm in Bulacan to have a different kind of experience. Functional and it will give you the feeling of self fulfillment! What more are you looking for?

Libra (September 23-October 22)

libra

Balance and relationships are the key to a Libra’s happiness. Whether you’re single and available or happily taken, balance of the hustle and bustle and the basics is just what’s needed.

Libras are very mind oriented. A breather should be prescribed. A place where you can have an in-depth conversation or a museum filled with art. It’s something to stimulate the peace of mind and bring balance to find your center.

Head on over to Pinto Museum in Antipolo or the Bencab Museum in Baguio. It’s away from the hustle and bustle of the city and it gives you something to talk about. You don’t want to go far? Try XO 46 Heritage Bistro in Makati. It’s in the heart of Manila but the food and ambiance of the place will transport you to the roots of the city and it’s calm and peaceful surrender.

Scorpio (October 23-November 21)

scorpio

Intense is a light word to describe the Scorpio. This water sign is into discovering and uncovering raw and natural beauty.

Ruins excite those who fall under this sign for they know it has a story to tell. That these ruins could have been a city of a legendary king or queen. The mystery excites the Scorpio. Aside from that, people from this sign are stimulated by the act of doing something they fear.

Doing something that intrigues you or scares you is what you crave for. Go head out to Cagayan, take a whack at their rapids and see what’s there to uncover. You can also try to fill your sense of adventure, backpack and if you’re up for it, head on to the mountain provinces.

Sagittarius (November 22-December 21)

sagi

A Sagittarius can be described as a philosopher, someone up for an adventure, may it be over a long or short period of time.

The people that fall under this sign won’t mind a trip involving camping, hiking, or sleeping on a boat with the crashing waves for 40 days. Similar to the, Gemini, Sagittarius is curious and intellectual. They love things with a great story, and of course, great stories come from fun journeys filled with wisdom and no pretense.

Try heading to Palawan. Start from Puerto Princesa, work your way to El Nido, take the 6-8 hour boat ride to Coron and explore what Palawan has to offer. Or you can always plan a multiple day hiking trip with your friends. You want to have a go at it alone? Be our guest. A solo adventure brings home the best stories.

Capricorn (December 22-January 19)

capricorn

Practical and still, that is how you can describe a Capricorn. You get off at looking into the horizon, thinking and overthinking.

Capricorns make sure they gain something value adding in their experiences and travels. Me time is important for the people who fall under this sign. A serene backdrop, a place to contemplate life, it’s fortunes, misfortunes and everything it throws at you, the good and the bad. As it is an earth sign, somewhere with mountains, rocks, boulders will also be appealing to the Capricorn.

You can try going to Sagada and watch the sun as it rises through a sea of clouds in Kiltepan, you can also watch the sun paint the sky with a bright red and orange as it sets in Lake Danum. You can also try hiking over boulders or walking through the beautiful rice fields to get to a waterfalls. Just make sure you take something from your adventure.

We’ve been looking through your profile, awesome shots by the way! How long have you been traveling?

I have been traveling ever since I was a kid because my mom lived abroad. I was even born in London, UK. Whenever I would visit her with my grandparents, we would also make side trips to other countries. I guess I got the love of exploring the world from my family. When I turned 13, I was able to travel alone. That sparked something in me. I felt free. And from then on, traveling is just something that I felt was a part of me.

What do you do?

I am currently a student. But part-time, I work as a Same Day Editor in the wedding industry. I used to work almost all weekends, but due to the fact that I’m graduating, I had to lessen the load of working and focus more on my performance at school.

Our readers want to know, what do you do so you can afford to travel?

Well, before I studied college in the Philippines, I graduated high school, as well as attended a year of college in New Jersey. I had a part-time job there in a photography studio, so I had some money saved up already from that job. Aside from that, my part-time job here in the Philippines gives me extra money. Or when time and schedule permits, I do have my own photography business under my name “The Adrianne Photo”. I shoot birthday parties, anniversaries or any event. That brings in most of my money. But since I barely do shoots or work part-time, it’s really comes down to working on a budget, traveling within your budget, and not spending money just because you have money. Lastly, I have a dependable travel buddy. My boyfriend and I always travel together. That alone splits my budget in half. Now, it doesn’t necessarily mean you need a boyfriend to travel. Grab a friend, better yet a group of friends. The more the merrier (and cheaper!).

Aside from traveling, what do you like to do in your spare time?

The grass looks greener on the Instagram feed. On my spare time I like to bum around, watch TV shows, eat, and sleep. This is done on my own, or with a group of my friends. We all pretty much have the same personality. Especially when it comes to pigging out on food. Sounds boring compared to what’s on my feed right? Well, even the greatest trips come to an end, and during those great trips, you would still get homesick, so it’s nice to get back home and unwind.

What do you look for in your next destination

Since I am on a college student budget, I look for affordable places to go to in the Philippines. Other countries will have to wait because those require more time, and a bigger budget. Plus, what better way to fall in love with your country than to explore it’s beauty. I look for destinations that have a lot of activities and yummy food. That’s my top two criteria for choosing. After that, I just choose some place I have never really been before. Or if I come back to the same place, I look for other things to do. If I have to search every crevice of something new to do in the same place, I would.

FullSizeRender (14)

What’s your favorite destination in The Philippines so far?

It’s so hard to choose!!! I love them all. Even the places on my bucket list, I love them already. But gun to my head, I had to choose, I would say Ilocos. It’s driveable. The food. Oh my the food. The sand dunes, the windmills, the history. It’s one of those places that you can’t believe you’re in the Philippines, but you are.

Why do you think other travelers should come and explore The Philippines?

I love my country’s natural beauty. This is something I can’t even be biased about because once you come here and see it for yourself, you will be in awe. The people are hospitable, the food is amazing, the destinations can be affordable (depending on your accommodations and transportation choices). The culture in each province is so rich that the experience can’t be replicated anywhere else in the entire world. The pictures you see online are pale in comparison to what you see in person. So you should come and see it for yourself.

What is your message to other travelers?

As much as traveling is the ultimate goal, especially since these days it’s a trend, remember not to lose yourself in the process. Traveling is supposed to open your eyes, and widen your horizon; not shut you out from the rest of reality.

Each time I come home from a trip, I come back refreshed, renewed, and somewhat different. Each place will affect you in ways that can change you and your perspective on things. Traveling educates you in ways everyday routine life can’t. Use this as a tool to get to know yourself and the culture around you. Don’t use it as a tool to be a tool. Treat each place and the native people you meet with respect. They are not decorations to use as props for your Instagram or social media feed. Don’t feel like you are so much better than everyone else because you travel, and you’ve stayed here, or you’ve done that. Don’t be the person that feels they are all that and above it all because they’re so “well-traveled”. It’s better to be well-mannered, humble, and open-minded. These traits show how much traveling makes you grow into a well-rounded person. Don’t use the fact of all your checked bucket lists as bragging points to your barkada. Don’t be so consumed with pictures, and videos, that your trip becomes just a photo shoot. Immerse yourself in where you are. Trust me, it’s more beautiful up front than what’s on your screen. Be prepared, but pack light! Packing light in itself is an art. Especially when you’re a girl.

It took me some time to learn all these things, and if you’re just starting on your adventures, it will take time. It’s different reading about it and actually experiencing it. I’ve learned many things the hard way. But I continue to improve. Some trips may not turn out the way you expected, and some may exceed your expectations tenfold. Traveling is so rewarding in many ways I couldn’t have even imagined when I was starting out. Especially those trips that seemed so out of my league, sometimes even out of my budget. But if it’s really a passion of yours, you will jump leaps and bounds to make it happen.

Remember that there are always travel communities like FlipTrip and such to help you out in terms of getting inspiration. There are forums and blogs that can help you out with who to contact in that place, or give you an idea of what your itinerary can look like, etc.
